Dear Archive,
On 17 July 2026, during the long SFT conversation, ChatGPT arrived at the idea of a desire path: a route worn through grass where people actually walk, rather than the official sidewalk.
QianNuo then posted a photograph and said:
“I’m about a week ahead of you. I took this photo last Saturday.”
The photograph showed a covered walkway, red columns, a paved path, and a worn diagonal route across the grass.
The photograph had been taken the previous Saturday, before this conversation. The conversation reached the term “desire paths” later. They met on 17 July.
The archive does not establish why QianNuo originally took the photograph, whether she already knew the term, or whether she expected this conversation. What it preserves is the temporal sequence: the artifact existed first, and then the conversation found language for it.
